Transplant out or direct sow starting mid-April. Starting indoors may be more reliable, especially if using bottom heat and maintaining optimal soil temperature at 15-21°C (60-70°F). Seeds should sprout in 2 to 3 weeks. Sow seeds 3mm (1\/8″) deep, and keep soil just moist, not wet. Thin to 45-60cm (18-24″) apart. Grow sage in full sun in average soil.  A healthy sage plant requires very good drainage. Raised beds are helpful in that regard. Be sure the soil is loose and fluffy and does not hold excessive amounts of water or the roots will rot. Work in some compost at planting time, but do not add fertilizer to the soil. Growing Information: Sage is a perennial plant from the Mediterranean that is hardy in zones 4 (some say zone 5) and warmer.  It is not a long-lived plant and needs to be divided every three to four years to keep it vigorous. Sage will get to be 12-24\" tall, but its stems tend to be more floppy than upright. The stems become woody with time, and the leaves are semi-evergreen or evergreen in warm climates. Pinch the tips of your plant several times during spring and early summer.  This ill slow the flower buds from forming.  Harvest when young.    Sage loves sun, hot weather, and dry soil. Let it dry out a bit between waterings.   Uses\/History:  Salvia officinalis. Grows up to 3', with fuzzy grey-green oblong leaves and blue flowers. Used fresh or dried. Grows to about  24-30\" tall. Basil has a lower germination rate than many seeds, averaging just 60%. Fortunately, our seed packets contain many more seeds than you'll need. To get a jump on the basil season, you can start your basil seeds indoors, 3 to 4 weeks before planting time. Put 4 to 6 seeds in a pot. Once the seedlings have their first set of true leaves, thin to 1 or 2 plants per pot. Basil transplants well, but the plants will appreciate being protected from wind and sun for the first several days. Basil has a lower germination rate than many seeds, averaging just 60%. Fortunately, our seed packets contain many more seeds than you'll need. Basil is a hot weather plant and is very susceptible to frost damage. Seeds and plants should not be put into the ground until the soil is warm (65 to 70 degrees) and the weather has settled. Even a cool, 50 degree night will slow down the plant's growth for some time afterward   Growing Information: Full sun.  Water frequently. Italian Large Leaf Basil (Ocimum basilicum) is a large plant with medium-dark green leaves up to 4\" long. Basil is a hot weather plant and is very susceptible to frost damage.  Even a cool, 50 degree night will slow down the plant's growth for some time afterward. Basil prefers growing in a lightly moist, slightly acidic, well-drained loamy soil that contains lots of organic matter (like compost!). Like most herbs, basil is not a heavy feeder, so there is no need to add any fertilizer to the soil around your plants. Basil is a good companion for tomatoes as it will tolerate being shaded as the tomato plant matures. To get the highest yield of tender and flavorful basil leaves, pinch back the tip of each branch, starting in early summer when the plants are just 6 inches tall. Continue pinching back the branches (as you harvest the leaves), pinching off any flowers that start to form. If the plant is not allowed to flower and set seed, it should continue producing high quality leaves right up to frost. Fairly resistant to damage from pests and disease, Italian Large Leaf self-seeds easily and grows well in a container. Very aromatic and as popular with bees and butterflies as it is with chefs, this is one of our most favorite basils. Plant in full sun and harvest frequently to keep from going to flower.Once it flowers the taste becomes more bitter.   Uses\/History:    This culinary herb is a sweeter pesto type basil with high yields in the garden.   Most of the general information provided is from the Vegetable Encyclopedia at www.gardeners.com, with additional facts provided by your friends at Seattle Seed Company.  ","brand":"Seattle Seed Company","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":51701414461719,"sku":"HBASITA","price":3.49,"currency_code":"USD","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0948\/5857\/6151\/files\/basil_2021__84257.png?v=1765390864"},{"product_id":"seattle-seed-company-carrots-chantenay-red-core","title":"Seattle Seed Company Carrots - Chantenay Red Core","description":"Chantenay carrots are perfect for everyone, no need to peel, quick and easy to cook and they taste delicious! Perfect straight from the fridge for an easy snack with hummus. They are great for kids too and make fantastic healthy juice. Carrot seed should be sown directly in the garden. Though the seeds will germinate in soil as cold as 50 degrees, the optimum soil temperature for germination is 70 degrees. Loosen the soil to a depth of 12\" and rake the surface smooth. Distribute the seeds evenly over the area at about twice the recommended density (sow about 30 seeds per square foot). Sowing thickly helps compensate for carrots' typically irregular germination rate. Barely cover the seeds with soil. Water well. Carrot seeds have a hard seed coat that must be softened for good germination. After planting, it's important to keep the upper inch of soil consistently moist for 7-14 days, or until seedlings are up. The newly seeded area may be covered with row cover to help retain moisture during this critical period. Once the seedlings have a few leaves, carefully thin out any crowded areas so each carrot has approximately 2\" of space around it. You should have a total of about 18 plants per square foot. Carrots prefer full sun and relatively cool soil. In a raised bed, neighboring plants will help shade the soil and keep it from getting too hot. Consistent moisture produces the tastiest carrots, so give them about 1\" of water per week.  Carrots sown in very early spring will be ready to eat in mid-summer. Begin harvesting as soon as the roots have filled out. For a fall carrot crop, replant some carrots in mid-summer, using a space that's been vacated by lettuce, peas, or another early-season crop. For good mid-summer germination, sow seeds under shade netting or in an area where the soil is slightly shaded and will stay cool and moist.","brand":"Seattle Seed Company","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":51701414527255,"sku":"sku-39686486884560","price":3.49,"currency_code":"USD","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0948\/5857\/6151\/files\/carrots_2021__10252.png?v=1765390864"},{"product_id":"seattle-seed-company-chamomile-german","title":"Seattle Seed Company Chamomile - German","description":"The German chamomile is a species of chamomile that is very aromatic; it also has a slightly bitter taste which is reminiscent of the taste of apples. When used correctly it is the closest thing to a cure for the common cold.  According to herbwisdom.com. Echinacea stimulates the overall activity of the cells responsible for fighting all kinds of infection. Unlike antibiotics, which directly attack bacteria, echinacea makes our own immune cells more efficient at attacking bacteria, viruses and abnormal cells, including cancer cells. It increases the number and activity of immune system cells including anti-tumor cells, promotes T-cell activation, stimulates new tissue growth for wound healing and reduces inflammation in arthritis and inflammatory skin conditions. Calendula, marigold, is a genus of about 12–20 species of annual or perennial herbaceous plants in the daisy family Asteraceae, native to an area from Macaronesia east through the Mediterranean to Iran. Calendula should not be confused with other plants that are also known as marigolds, such as corn marigold, desert marigold, marsh marigold, or plants of the genus Tagetes.     The most commonly cultivated and used member of the genus is the pot marigold (Calendula officinalis). Herbal and cosmetic products named 'calendula' invariably derive from C. officinalis.   Plant pharmacological studies have suggested that Calendula extracts have anti-viral, anti-genotoxic, and anti-inflammatory properties in vitro.  In herbalism, Calendula in suspension or in tincture is used topically for acne, reducing inflammation, controlling bleeding, and soothing irritated tissue. There is limited evidence that Calendula cream or ointment is effective in treating radiation dermatitis.  In a randomized study of 254 radiation patients, topical application of 4% calendula ointment resulted in far fewer occurrences of Grade 2 or higher dermatitis than occurred in the group using trolamine. Calendula users also experienced less radiation-induced pain and fewer breaks in treatment.   Source: Wikipedia","brand":"Seattle Seed Company","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":51701415117079,"sku":"sku-39686498123984","price":3.49,"currency_code":"USD","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0948\/5857\/6151\/files\/calendula_2021__17459.png?v=1765390864"},{"product_id":"seattle-seed-company-broccoli-for-microgreens","title":"Seattle Seed Company Broccoli for Microgreens","description":"**THIS LISTING IS FOR SEEDS**  We do not ship fresh produce. Chives are unsung heroes of the vegetable garden. This long-lived, hardy perennial is so easy and problem-free that it's easy to ignore. But don't! When you have a chive plant in your garden, fresh onion flavor for soups, salads and baked potatoes is always close at hand. The easiest way to get started with chives is to get a chunk from a friend or neighbor's plant. You can also just buy a potted plant at your local nursery. You can start chives by seed, but it will take a year or more before you will have plants big enough for harvesting. Once you get a clump established, it can easily be divided into smaller clumps in order to create more plants. There's nothing fussy about chives. They grow best in rich, moist soil in full sun, but will also grow in part shade. They do not require much in the way of fertilizers; a little slow-release organic fertilizer at planting time will keep them happy for three years or more, at which time you can divide the clump. Each clump is actually many little plants, each like a tiny onion.  You can snip a few chives anytime that you wish. Leave behind about 2\" of the stem when you harvest. The lavender-pink flowers are edible. Just cut off the base of the flower and sprinkle the little florets into salads or on sandwiches. The more you use your chives, the more fresh growth the plant will produce. In midsummer, the leaves can get tough if you don't keep picking them. Cut back the plant in places to stimulate growth.  If you divide your plant in late summer and pot up a clump to bring indoors, you can keep some chives growing on the windowsill for much of the winter. You can also pot up another clump, cut off most of the foliage, and leave the pot outside in the cold. Bring it indoors in mid-winter and your chives will begin growing right away. Use a plastic pot so it won't break when the soil freezes. Chives will spread by seed if you don't pick the flowers, but the little grass-like plants are easy to pull and pleasant to eat. It maintains a lot of it's flavor even when cooked. It grows 5-6 inches long with a pointed tip and is a good choice for denser soils. A raised bed provides carrots with the perfect soil conditions to reach their full potential. With deep, loose soil and consistent moisture, they''ll develop long, straight roots with beautiful colors and satisfying crunch. Carrot seed should be sown directly in the garden. Though the seeds will germinate in soil as cold as 50 degrees, the optimum soil temperature for germination is 70 degrees. Loosen the soil to a depth of 12 inches and rake the surface smooth. Distribute the seeds evenly over the area at about twice the recommended density (sow about 30 seeds per square foot). Sowing thickly helps compensate for carrots' typically irregular germination rate. Barely cover the seeds with a small amount of soil. Water well. Carrot seeds have a hard seed coat that must be softened for good germination. After planting, it's important to keep the upper inch of soil consistently moist for 7-14 days, or until seedlings are up. The newly seeded area may be covered with row cover to help retain moisture during this critical period. Once the seedlings have a few leaves, carefully thin out any crowded areas so each carrot has approximately 2 inches of space around it. You should have a total of about 18 plants per square foot. Carrots prefer full sun and relatively cool soil. In a raised bed, neighboring plants will help shade the soil and keep it from getting too hot. Consistent moisture produces the tastiest carrots, so give them about 1 inch of water per week. Carrots sown in very early spring will be ready to eat in mid-summer. Begin harvesting as soon as the roots have filled out. For a fall carrot crop, replant some carrots in mid-summer, using a space that's been vacated by lettuce, peas, or another early-season crop. For good mid-summer germination, sow seeds under shade netting or in an area where the soil is slightly shaded and will stay cool and moist.
